The seventies as seen by Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz at Luma Foundation

All summer long, in Arles, in parallel with les Rencontres de la Photographie, Annie Leibovitz has her own exhibition at the Luma Foundation, which has just acquired her whole archive. The American photographer is currently showing pictures from 1970 to 1983, when she was working for Rolling Stone Magazine. Commissioned by the publication, she went touring with the Stones, followed Nixon’s campaign and photographed Joan Didion, Patti Smith, Tennessee Williams, Andy Warhol… I love this particular period of her work: her style is quite journalistic, not as staged as her pictures from the eighties, when she started working for Vanity Fair.
